old rx battery

very lucky yesterday when my rx batt died on the backside of a loop (pulled out of vert dive by itself) and plane only mildly damaged. i knew the batts were old but they took a full charge and load tested good before flight. voltage was good afterwards but a load test showed rapid drop to 3.4v in about 20 secs. put the purchase date on them and trash them after three years is my new rule.
